C&O Canal/Washington DC Trip 2000
This not a complete report, just some highlights of the Sweet Onion
Cyclist's 4th annual trip to ride the C&O Canal from Cumberland MD
to Washington DC in May-June, 2000. We didn't make it back to the
C&O in 2001, but I hope to get a small group to go this fall, in September
2002. We have never been there when the autumn leaves are radiant
with golds and reds. Let Lamar know if you want to be included.

Harry & Flem pause for a photo op on the C&O Canal National Historic Park towpath. That's pretty much how the towpath looks for 184-awesome miles. On the left is the dried up canal bed. The Potomac River is to the right a short distance (often only 20 feet or less). |
| We had 6 people on the C&O
Canal/Washington DC 2000 Trip. This pic is at the entrance to the Paw
Paw Tunnel. Do you see the light at the end of the tunnel, just to
the left of MJ Lowe's head?
Most of the gang walked the 6 tenths of a mile through the cool damp tunnel. I rode my bike through thanks to a headlight. |

| The trip from DC to Great Falls via the C&O Canal Towpath was not without incidence. When Flem hit a rock and rode his bike into the canal, Harry tried to get to the rescue by staying on his bike until the last minute, but due to a miscalculation, Harry also rode his bike into the canal. Flem came out cold and wet. Harry came out cold, wet and skinned from his face to his shins. | Mike, Harry and Ed in front of old train stop on the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park (46 mile rail trail). The W&OD is a favorite of everyone on the trip each year. |
